2025 Student Advocacy Fellows Convening

On February 7–8, 2025, student advocates from across Texas gathered in Austin for the Student Advocacy Fellows Convening—a dynamic two-day event designed to equip a diverse group of emerging student leaders with the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to drive systemic change during the legislative session.

The convening brought together more than 40 student fellows

Key Highlights

The convening brought together more than 40 student fellows from Breakthrough Central Texas, EdTrust’s Justice Fellows Policy Program, Young Invincibles’ Young Advocates Program, the Student Advisory Council, Every Texan, and IDRA for a series of interactive workshops and networking opportunities.

Networking Dinner

The event kicked off with an evening of connection and collaboration, allowing student advocates to meet peers from across the state, share their experiences, and engage with advocacy professionals in an informal setting.

Breakfast Training & Workshops

The following morning featured skills-based training sessions focused on key policy and advocacy strategies:

  • Understanding the Legislative Process: Fellows got an overview of the 89th Texas Legislature, including key leaders and issues to watch during session. They also gained practical tips and first-hand insights for engaging in the policymaking process, hearing from peers with direct experience advocating during previous legislative sessions.

  • Engaging with Legislative Staff: Fellows got to hear from an invited panel of legislative staffers who shared their roles, as well as tips for engaging effectively with them and their peers across the Capitol. Staffers also shared their passion for the work they do and generously shared their respective advocacy and career journeys.

  • Storytelling for Impact & Media: Students learned how to craft and share personal narratives to drive policy change. Fellows practiced communication strategies for meeting with policymakers and speaking with reporters, leaving with actionable tools and tactics to engage during the legislative session.

Building a Stronger Advocacy Community

Beyond skill-building, the convening fostered a sense of community among student advocates dedicated to advancing student-focused policy change in Texas. Through shared experiences, expert guidance, and meaningful discussions, participants strengthened their networks and left better equipped to take action.

As one participant shared, “The storytelling workshop provided a strong framework for crafting my story and anticipating counterarguments.” Another attendee reflected, “The panel discussion gave me confidence in my role as an advocate during the 89th Texas Legislative Session.”

We look forward to seeing these passionate leaders drive their priorities throughout the legislative session.
